Custom Team Logos

Branding & Logo Design

Having played video games my entire life, I have alway gravitated towards the General Management/ Sandbox style aspect of games. In the case of NBA2k, I was extremely excited when I found that a gamer could create their own expansion team and even add custom logos along with custom uniforms. Although I would enjoy creating players, and playing through a season; creating a custom team was what ultimately drove me to play the game.

I give other credit to the "Team Builder" mode in the EA NCAA games. This is what started me designing teams logos in the first place. Video games have been a huge inspiration for designing logos. Most often, whenever I create a new logo, it's for the sole purpose of gaming.

Below are a couple of teams and logos I came up with while playing the game. Some of the logos are new custom designs and others are redesigns of former NBA teams or ABA teams.

The concept of this team was to focus on the Naval history of San Diego, California. Have visited there multiple times. Also my father was in the Navy for 20 years, so building a US Navy inspired logo was very fun. Overall, I was inspired to create a basketball team reflective of the large Naval influence in the city. The colors Navy Blue and Gold were a direct influence from the Naval Academy Colors in Annapolis, MD.

The concept of this team was to overall design a team for Louisville, Kentucky. After looking over many blogs, posts and articles on the most likely areas the NBA would expand, Louisville, Kentucky was always at the top of the list.

The logo is based the very popular Kentucky Bluebird. I decided to use this bird because of it's vast population in Kentucky and the fact that the Cardinal bird has been used at Louisville University and many other teams. The idea of the logo was based on the idea of creating a "retro" logo to later be modernized (which I will post here when I create it).

The idea of this team was to create something for the state of PA. With Philly having an NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL team, I thought it would be fitting for Pittsburgh to have an NBA team themselves to match up. Doing a quick online search, a popular team name that showed up was "Ironmen". With that, I created a logo that would reflect. The colors are the same as most of the colors for their teams like the NHL Penguins, NFL Steelers and the MLB Pirates.
